Q.
Don't you use a redirect server??A. Yes, of course we do!
Q.
Also, tell me about this "Auto Compression" of the server.A. First of all, is your server hosted with GameServers.com - where they have the "automatic" redirect file compression?
I assume you do by your post.
When we had trouble with our redirect several years ago a GameServers tech/admin was answering our ticket.
He told us (as best I remember) something to the effect that the GameServers redirect system automatically compresses the files (at the location of the redirect - not on the actual game server) at the time of the download, then sends the file to the client/player from that redirect url.
They do not actually "store" the compressed file there though.
That GameServers tech/admin told us to try another URL (a NY location) for the redirect because the one we were using wasn't very good.
We did, and it generally worked great.
It still on occasion does not work, and that has been a problem with the GameServers' redirect system for many many years now.
One of their glitches.
Also, we have found that on occasion when the redirect fails to work as it should, it generally works to totally stop connecting to the server, then go all the way out and try to connect again.
Do Not hit "re-connect" in the UT menu <- that tends to Not work.
"The problem is the file is loading from the server, not the ftp redirect."Yes, I understand that, as I have been running UT99 online servers since the early 2000's (many years) both hosted at home and on commercial hosts.
I have also helped many UT Server admins get started and also helped many UT99 server admins with troubles with their servers over the years.
"To fix the problem go into the Unreal Tournament ini file.
In the section [IpDrv.TcpNetDriver]
Change AllowDownloads to False"I will try this, and I totally understand what this does, however that post on Epic's forum touts that as a test of the redirect, and not a solution.
Is that the way you leave it on your server - as "false" all the time? - if so, I may try that too, if it works OK.
Another thing I may try as a last ditch effort is to re-upload the "
FoodFight.u" file to see if the redirect grabs it again and starts using the redirect for its download.
Re-uploading files has worked in the past to correct the redirecting for some stuborn files.
Again, this is about the only file that has given us any redirect downloading problems lately.
If things do not correct this problem I may just delete the Food Fight portion off our server.
Sadly, because a good number of players especially love playing the Fry Pan arena of Food Fight on CMM.
Also sadly because CMM is the Original Official Food Fight Server - arg!
"If you notice there is never anyone on the server"Well, our server is quit popular actually, and is played quit a bit.
Also, I am fully aware that some potential CMM players are turned away by this, but that is a problem I have seen on other servers that have Food Fight on them - alas!
Most of those server admins also suggest manually downloading that "FoodFight.u" file before playing on their servers, so it may be a problem with just that file!?!?
As I said above - If things we try do not correct this problem soon, I may just delete the Food Fight portion off our server. ARG!
But I do not have much choice about it I guess.
Hopefully it will get sorted out soon, and maybe so, as I have not even really tried to fix it yet, so who knows.
Thank you so much for your input though,
it hopefully will help in the solution to the Food Fight mod's problems of redirect.
I also may have to add you to our
*HUTP UT Resource Guru* STAFF Group!
I should be able to try some things to correct that redirect of that file sometime this weekend. (I hope)
I also hope to see you join us on CMM sometime soon!
We have a good group of regulars usually.
PS: I may move some of this thread over to our
Unreal Tournament 99/G.O.T.Y. - *SERVER HOW-TO* section ...
