Well, the wife and I finally did it. We Ditched the DISH TV at our house! We finally had enough of paying big time for mostly ads and infomercial tv. We have Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix, which cost Less than 1/2 the price of Dish TV or any other pay for tv! Next we will be putting up an HD Digital Antenna, for free over the airwaves TV!

I did this back in March of 2017, and with a smart tv "I LOVE IT" also with a good HDTV antenna you will be amazed with what is available free over the air, and internet(FREE)like Pluto, Tubi, and Crackle.

Well, I put up that nice New HD antenna! I certainly agree with you DLD-RABBIT about this. I bought a GE Pro HD Yagi outdoor antenna from Wal-Mart for $49.50 (US) - Good for 70 miles from the transmitter towers. This GE PRO Antenna had very good ratings everywhere I looked. I am about 40+ miles from our transmitter towers. I placed it right on the existing Dish tv mast and hooked to existing cables. I connected 3 of our TVs to it and WOW!!! Had all 3 TVs on at the same time and ALL worked awesomely! Better picture and sound than the Dish! I Got 34 channels. (so far, as I haven't adjusted the antenna at all yet) So glad I did this!

One of our TVs is an LG 4K UltraHD 41" Smart TV. Last night I looked at some apps already on that TV. One of the apps was an LG app called "Channel+" What it does is pull in a bunch of FREE Internet TV Streams and adds them to your Channel listing (like a TV listing guide) just like the over-the-air stations. That gave be a Bunch more channels that I merely click on to view. Only a couple of those new channels were not HD - Most all of them are HD. There are a bunch more apps to see what they do on that tv. I noticed a few of them were free channels to add - more channels to come?

I got rid of cable TV 15 years ago. I didn't miss it that much as towards the end I was only watching 3 cable programs weekly anyhow. There are more and more channels being added all the time on digital TV. It's great! I get all of the Canadian networks plus independents and all the local U.S. channels except NBC too. For some reason NBC Buffalo went to a low power transmitter, which is too bad, as they had 3 channels going at the time that I lost them. I'm running a 40 year old antenna and 50 foot tower setup. I may upgrade some time, as there are U.S. channels that are just out of reach. I had good reception for a day or two, and a broadcaster near Buffalo came in with 10 channels going! They had really old Sgt Bilko episodes going on one channel, and another dedicated to classic cars. I wish they were still coming in. New design antennas paired up work well I hear. Some day!

Don't forget (Pluto TV has 100 channels), Crackle and Tubi TV are also free, and a good option.

I forgot to note in my post above that we now have about 180+ channels between the antenna and the internet on our main 4K TV, all FREE - and that is without any additional apps like Netflix or Hulu, or even such as mentioned by DLD-VIPER just above, which are also FREE and I may still add. Did I mention that the quality is Much BETTER now also than with Dish Network or cable. Yep!

Well I'm not online, so it's the antenna, or nuthin'. Between reading my books, watching TV, and sitting on my butt here at the library to be online, I don't get out enough already. I think streaming those free internet channels would turn me into an entire couch potato! ___________________ EDIT: On the 21st of Sept 2018 I lost a tree in a nasty windstorm. It knocked down my antenna tower as it fell. I rescued the back half of my antenna and stuck it up onto a 10 foot tall wooden mast which I anchored on a wooden privacy fence. It actually works, but being severely damaged and only about 15 feet high, I only get about half my usual channels now. It's interesting to see how wind and weather affects reception. It can be raining cats and dogs with no effect, but then if the rain drops change size at some point you might lose your entire signal. Any wind that rocks the antenna on its pole will cause the picture to break up, or the sound to cut in and out. It seems entirely random which effect you will get. The net effect can be as little as mere annoyance all the way to channels which come in one day, but not the next. -Or come in for a few days and then disappear for weeks on end. My insurance company cashed me out on the tower's replacement cost. I still haven't decided what solution I'm going to go with. There are a number of antenna designs I am looking at, and I may not replace the tower, but just go with something that straps to my new chimney and uses an inline amplifier to boost the signal.
I see that once all of this is sorted and in place, I should consider buying a "smart" TV that has these internet TV apps on it. More channels = more fun. I'm in Canada, so at this point I have no idea just how much internet TV is available here. Or if I can pull any in from the USA.
