How do I set up a UT Server? - (UT99)
From Post on Old HUTP Forum ...
www.tapatalk.com/groups/hooksutplace/how-do-i-set-up-a-ut-server-ut99-t442.html
Well, I have a tutorial I have worked on for more up to date information on this but I would have to go find it again.
Actually, I WILL find it for you tomorrow! (no time now)
One excellent tutorial was written several years back by one of our members -> Hermskii.
His is pretty darn good, but it is a bit outdated and not as simple, fast and easy as mine is.
BUT, the way he has his installation process set up is very well done!
You can Download his UT Manual here ...

Dedicated UT Server setup in UT436 and above.
For UT (Unreal Tournament - aka UT99 or UT-GOTY)
by Hook - 9/24/08 (so far)
Hook's UT Place - hooksutplace.freeforums.net
Setting up a Dedicated UT Server from within the game for the Internet!
This is for Cable, DSL or T1 Servers.
OK, here we go...
To launch a dedicated server from within the Game itself, this is the easiest way for New Server Admins to begin.
We will be setting up a server that is connected to the Internet for this article. (Not a LAN)
Ok, first we Launch UT and after it is all ready:
Click on Options > Preferences > Network > Select "LAN,Cable,xDSL"
(NOTE: The above line with spaces and ">" is the way steps in a selection (drop down) menu will be shown)
Next, Click on Multiplayer > Start New Multiplayer Game >
You will come to the Control Window to set up your server.
The Tab showing will be "MATCH"...
First, choose which "Game Type" and which "Map" you want to start the server with.
(NOTE: The Maps Name selections only show maps that are associated with the Game Type you have selected)
If you click on the down arrow, a drop down menu will appear showing a Listing of Game Types and Maps available from your UnrealTournament/Maps directory, just like when to start a "Practice Game".
Highlight and click on your selection.
If you click on the "MapList" button you will see a two section window.
The lefthand window gives you a "Not Cycled" list of maps from you UnrealTournament/Maps directory (folder) that will not be running in the map cycle list.
The righthand window shows the "Maps Chosen" to be run in the map cycle list.
To move maps from one window section to the other just highlight and double click (or just double click) on the Map's Name and it will jump to the other window section.
If you click on the "Mutators" button, the two section window for mutators will appear using the same format as the map cycle list we talked about above.
The "Auto Change Levels" box...
You need to have this box checked if you want your server to change maps automatically at the end of each game level (map), it will follow the map cycle list you set up.
"RULES" TAB ...
"Max Team Score" Set the game score for ending the TeamGame here.
"Weapons Stay" Check this box for the weapon to remain in the map when you pick it up, making it available for the next player to be able to pick it up immediately after someone else does.
If you uncheck the box, then after a player picks up the weapon, it will disappear from the map for a set amount of time, leaving the next player without that weapon available to him/her.
"Max Connections" Set the maximum number of players you want to allow in the game.
"Force Team Balance" Check this box for the game engine to balance the teams as players come into the game.
The Game bases the decision on the number of players on each team at that moment of entry.
"Force Respawn" If you check this box then when you are killed, you will immediately respawn (re-enter the game) with no time to stop and rest.
If you walk away from the computer with your player still in the game, it will keep respawning and getting killed, causing your teammates to get really annoyed at you!
If you did this on someone else's server and they saw what was happening, they would most likely "KICK" you from the server.
"Friendly Fire percentage" This sliding scale lets you adjust how much "damage" you cause your teammates when you "accidentaly" shoot them. Most servers run it at 0%.
"Time Limit" This is in minutes, for how long you want the game to run before it shuts down the level (map) if the score has not been reached.
"Tournament" Normally, servers do not check this box.
If you check this box then the game will not start until all the player are in and you will not be able to change teams during the Tournament Matches.
"Max Spectators" Sets the number of people who can enter the game as a spectator.
Spectators pull down the same amount of bandwidth and CPU usage and memory allocation as a player.
So be careful how many you allow in the game to watch.
"Max Teams" Sets the maximum number of teams that will be allowed in the game.
If you have it set for "2", the default will be 2 teams, BLUE and RED.
If you try to join the GREEN team it will not allow it to happen and will assign you to either the RED or the BLUE team.
Set to "3", the default will be 3 teams, BLUE, RED and GREEN.
Set to "4", the default will be 4 teams, BLUE, RED, GREEN and GOLD.
"4" Teams is the Maximum setting!
"SETTINGS" Tab ...
"Game Style" The default or normal setting is "Hardcore".
There is a drop down menu with other settings...
@@@@ ADD "OTHER" Settings Here! @@@@
"Game Speed" This "sliding scale" will set the game to run faster or slower depending on the setting.
"Air Control" Set How Much (directional) Control you have when in the air or falling through the air.
"Translocator" Check this box IF you want to allow the use of the Translocator on the server.
It is a wrist worn device (beacon) that you "shoot" over to a location by pressing "fire" button, if you press the "fire" button again you will be transported (teleported) over to the spot where the Translocator beacon is.
Right Clicking Cancels the Translocator after it has been shot and makes it ready to shoot again.
"BOTS" Tab ...
"Base Skill" Sets the amount of skill the BOTs have.
Lower settings make them easy targets and lesser skilled all around.
Higher settings of course make them feared opponents with higher skills all around.
"Min. Total Players" The minimum number of players (Human and Bots) that will be maintained in the game. If the Human Player count drops below this setting, then the BOTS will come in to keep the number at the minimum.
As Human players enter the game, the BOTS will leave.
If the Human player count goes to this number then there will be "NO" BOTS in the game.
"Auto Adjust Skill" If this box is checked, then as you are playing the game with BOTS in it, they will "learn" how to play better or worse as the game progresses depending on how skilled the Human Players are.
"Balance Teams" If this box is checked, the BOTS will move back and forth between teams as needed to keep the teams balanced based on the number of players on each team.
"Configure" Button If you click on this, it will open a new screen showing the BOTS and their individual settings.
You can change the look of each bot and many of their individual characteristics here!
This can really be quite interesting to do.
I (Hook) once changed the first 15 bots to Look and Act as closely as I could set them to my family members and some close relatives, even a couple of our pets, with all of their names too!
It felt very much like I was playing with the real family members!
"Random Order" If this box is checked, then BOTS entering the game will be chosen randomly from the 32 bots available.
If you uncheck it then the bots will appear in the game in the order that they are listed in your "Configure" screens, starting always with the First Bot, the Second Bot, and so on.
This is a good setting if you have set up some "custom" bots with custom settings for your server.
If you want to use custom bots, always un-check random order and customize the bots you wish to starting always with the First Bot, the Second Bot, and so on.
"SERVER" Tab ...
"Server Name" Enter the name you choose for your server. Example:-> Hook's CROSSBONES "FUN" Server
"Admin Name" Enter your admin name. Example:-> Hook
"Admin E-mail" Enter this if you wish to be contacted about your server. Example:-> hook8@msn.com
This is very helpful for getting feedback from players about your server...good and bad.
"MOTD Line 1 thru 4" Message of the Day fields.
Example:-> ...
Line 1: Welcome to Hook's CrossBones "FUN" Server!
Line 2: Have a GREAT and FUN Time Here!
Line 3: Be Sure to stop in and Chat at our Forums!
Line 4: Register for FREE at: hooksutplace.freeforums.net
"Advertise Server" Check this box for Internet play!
If checked, this will add your server to the "Master Servers" and in turn will also add your server to the Internet game browser tabs.
"ngWorldStats Logging" Do NOT check this box! - It is NO Longer used and just slows down your game!
When it WAS in use, it recorded your scoring and gaming statistics on the internet for all to view, but it still slowed your game down quite a bit between levels!
"Optimize for LAN" Check this box IF and ONLY if you will be running your server for LAN (Local Area Network) players ONLY.
It sets your maxClientrate and maxtickrates to higher values that your LAN will handle BUT your Internet connection will NOT handle.
Keep this UN-Checked for Normal Internet or "WAN" (Wide Area Network) Play!
"Game password" Use this if you only want players who know this password to get into the game.
Good for private games, Clan Matches, or Clan or Group Practice sessions.
"Admin Password" This password is for the Admin to be able to enter the Admin Control Panel to change settings in the game from the Command Console Window.
"WWW Remote Admin" If this box is checked, you can control your server from a remote PC location over the Internet using your built-in UT Remote Admin Website.
"WWW Username" This is the Admin name you choose and use to access the Remote Admin Website.
"WWW Password" This is the password you choose and use to gain access to the Remote Admin Website.
"Webserver Port No." Also called the Listen Port in your UnrealTournament.ini file.
The default is 80, many other server softwares use port 80 also, so if you have any of these running you will need to change this number to something like 90 or 8888.
If you are running Linux, then this number needs to be greater than 1024.
A commonly used number for Linux is 5080.
If you change this number, then when you enter your http address you will need to add this port number to it:
example of a normal address log in:
24.160.33.22/ServerAdmin/
with the port number added:
24.160.33.22:8888/ServerAdmin/
Make sure you add that last / otherwise it will not work.
"OKAY... READY... SET..."DEDICATED"..."
Now Click on the "Dedicated" Button to Launch a Dedicated Server.
This will NOT allow you to play in the same game that is running the UT Server.
(or from the same machine)***
***(There IS a way around this though and I will ADD this information soon!)***
***(You can play from the same machine (computer), but there are some things you must do differently)***
The game will close down and you will see a UT icon appear in the lower righthand portion of your monitor screen in your taskbar.
If you right click on the icon you will see a drop down menu like this:
If you left click on the top option "UnrealServer Option" you will see:
(This does what? well that is another Article)
However if you read the lines shown in the Console window, you will see that the UdpServerUplink: ports successfully bound to three UT Browsers:
mplayer, EpicGames and Gamespy. (EDIT: mplayer is gone - no longer a master server - see below)
New one is qtracker!
So hopefully everyone will see your server and come in to play.
EDIT: here is a new set of Master Servers - these are directly from my server log.

If you choose "Advanced Options" you will see:
(This does what? well that is another Article)
Last but not least "Exit UnrealServer"
Click on that to... Yes, you guessed it... you will shut down the server and exit UT totally.
