Ok, let me fire up this board.
What if Unreal, didn't turn into UT? Would this still exist?

Arena shooters were BIG business in the late 90s and early 00's.
It's almost certain that something would have taken its place, but it would be interesting to imagine what that would have been like!

Hard to say. I imagine Quake would have solidified its grasp on the shooter scene. Perhaps even more Half-Life engined multiplayer games would have surfaced (besides Counter-Strike, of course).
It would be a crying shame for UT99 to not be on the map, but I suppose we'd be fauning over Quake arena shooters instead!
Can you imagine? Hook's Quake Place? Not the same ring lol

Could be worse. We could be drowning in Counter-Strike clones...

I would still be playing Quake XD Same. I loved Quake 3. The mods for that were brilliant, even in single player!

I played both, back in schools, when the teacher was away in class, we all had 20+ lan parties.
Those were the days when ALT+TAB was your true savior, and the teacher did not have a clue. mmmmmhhuuuhahahahahaa.

Reminds me when I was at school and every time the IT teacher was out of the room you'd hear sounds from Windows 95's 3D Pinball lol

Then someone would HAVE to have Unreal and show me how to get into it. I was totally out of luck finding such!

Ok, let me fire up this board. What if Unreal, didn't turn into UT? Would this still exist? Yes, it would still exist, but more in the form of the original Unreal's Botmatch. Botmatch online had a lot of problems, but they were gradually sorted, for the most part. I even played on a botmatch server years ago. There were only about 3 to choose from. I chose the one with the best ping, but even then I was lagging badly. Of course I think I was still on 56k back then. But I did see the possibilities. Who knows what players and mappers and modders would have come up with by now, if the original botmatch had been the template for online play? Many of the original botmatch maps were ported to UT 99, and even UT 2004, but most were not the same or as much fun as the original maps.
